4 Jun 2015: Sun-setting support for Windows XP in Affixa Desktop
Affixa has supported Windows XP from its very first version and has continued to do so even though it hasn't been supported by Microsoft since April 2014.
If you continue to use Windows XP now that support has ended, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Internet Explorer 8 is also no longer supported, so if your Windows XP PC is connected to the Internet and you use Internet Explorer 8 to surf the web, you might be exposing your PC to additional threats. Also, as more software and hardware manufacturers continue to optimise for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter more apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP.
At the beginning of June 2015, we received an email from our systems host, Microsoft Azure, advising us that from mid-July 2015 they will be updating the TLS/SSL cipher suites that ensure data is transmitted securely when you connect to our servers using HTTPS.
Unfortunately, Internet Explorer 8 and the .NET Framework on Windows XP do not and cannot support the new versions of the cipher suites.
We're aware that we still have a handful of Windows XP machines running Affixa out there, so we have identified a way to keep XP supported until the end of this year, however you will need to update the software on affected PCs to version 3.2015.06.23 or later. This can be found on our Download page.
We've decided that we will cease to support Windows XP from early December 2015 at the latest, however it could be that further changes may happen before then that expedite matters. The biggest risk is that Google update the cipher suites on their servers, in which case supporting Affixa on Windows XP will simply no longer be tenable whatsoever.
Thanks for your patience and understanding, and do drop us a line if you have any further questions or concerns.
